Nitro Crossfire Golf Balls (a Review)

Its rare that I play golf with an off brand name golf ball; but I thought that today I would evaluate one that I had not played before. I generally like to play Titleist or Top Flight balls; but since I have gotten older, my swing has slowed down and I am not striking the ball hard enough to use a higher compression ball. This year I have been driving the ball straight, but very short off the tee; only about 200 yards. Its difficult to score well when you always have to play a long iron or metal

wood into the green.
It just so happened that I was in Kmart this morning, so I looked in their golf ball display to see what ball I would test today. All the golf balls were marked down which tempted me to buy one of my familiar standbys; but I refrained from buying them and opted for the cheapest ball on the rack, NITRO crossfires. A box of twelve was only $5.99. I hesitated buying them because I was afraid of how they would perform; but I decided to give them a chance.
After hitting a few balls on the range, I took my NITROs to the first tee with me, expecting them to perform like your average range ball. I was surprised that on my very first drive the ball exploded off my driver and travelled straight down the fairway for about 230 yards. My second shot came up just short of the green.
It was straight and would have been right on target if I had picked the right club. I continued to use the NITROs for the rest of the round. I consistently hit between 225 and 240 yards off the tee. I was amazed at the extra 25- 35 yards I was averaging on my drives. I have a golf swing that is slow, all arms, and little leg movement. The ball was going a great distance, especially considering the soft swings I was taking.
Not only were my drives longer, but my irons also averaged about ten yards longer than normal. The ball had a very soft feel to it and I had a lot of control over the direction of my shots. I tried to find the compression of these balls. Several places on the web indicated that most NITROs were a 70 compression. I normally don't like a seventy compression ball; but for my swing, these balls were perfect.
I would recommend these NITRO crossfires particularly for the following golfers: older golfers with a softer swing, young golfers who are just learning how to play, and average women golfers. I believe a harder, high compression ball still may be the best fit for the pros and the hard hitters out there.
